Though many are lashing out about Senator Harry Reid’s incredibly hostile and ridiculous comments from the floor of the Senate, I have to add my two cents worth to the cacophony. His words in part:
"Instead of joining us on the right side of history, all the Republicans can come up with is, 'slow down, stop everything, let's start over.' If you think you've heard these same excuses before, you're right," Reid said Monday. "When this country belatedly recognized the wrongs of slavery, there were those who dug in their heels and said 'slow down, it's too early, things aren't bad enough.'"
Reid is most fortunate that our children are brought up in a public school system where they learn very little about their Nation’s history. The Great Emancipator President Abraham Lincoln was the first Republican President. It was the Republicans who opposed slavery against a largely Democrat opposition. Indeed even later it was the Democrats who filibustered the Civil Rights Act of 1964. To break the filibuster and pass the Civil Rights Act President Johnson got the support he needed from Senator Everett Dirksen the Republican minority leader in the Senate. Sounds to me as if the Democrats are the party of wait-a-minute.
Were Americans more in tune with their history and with economics there would be no Democrat Party. One of the great mysteries of my life will be why Blacks in America vote for members of a party who held them in physical bondage until 1865 and then put them in virtual bondage in 1962.
