I was aboard USS Iwo Jima (LPH-2) when we pulled into New York harbor for a Bob Hope special. We weren't at war, but we still appreciated him and the rest of the gang. A fitting tribute to a great friend of service men and women as well as an American patriot.
God Bless you Bob.

Good video. Thanks for sharing. Bob Hope was a true comedian, one of many during that era - not what they think comedy is today.
ReplyDeleteHope did a show aboard the Iwo Jima for Christmas '83, off the coast of Beirut. They flew the troops out in shifts, and Hope and gang did separate shows until every Marine had seen it. A real great American, even though, like Obama, he was foreign born.
ReplyDeleteRight,
ReplyDeleteSo true - he was a Great American
Tenth,
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised the old Iwo held up that long. She was a creaky tub when I was aboard.
I think that Gary Sinise is going to be the guy we look back on in 20 years and revere like Hope.
I agree. Having met him I will honestly say he is a great American. A good guy through and through.
ReplyDeleteCS- What does Sinise do for the troops?
ReplyDeleteI am way too young to have enjoyed Hope's comedy. But what I find remarkable, is how he did all these things, for free. As compared to other entertainers.
Johnny,
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw Bob Hope he was pretty old. They filmed his appearance for a television show (it was in 1979 or 1980). His live monologue was about three or four times as long as the television segment because we didn't laugh at all of his jokes. But he was enthusiastic and it was pretty neat to have him aboard.
Gary Sinise started a band called the "Lieutenant Dan Band" after the character he played in the movie "Forrest Gump." He went overseas with the USO and it got in his blood. He's over in front of troops every chance he gets and he started up a foundation:

Senise is a hero in my book.
CS- F##kin A, I've actually seen his band. They play some local shows. I didn't know he was that involved with the troops, and morale. God Bless him.
ReplyDeleteJohnny,
ReplyDeleteThere you go God Blessin again. We might make a believer out of you, yet.
I think Sinise saw an empty spot where Bob Hope used to stand and, stepped up nicely. Hope had some big shoes to fill.
