It’s Academy Awards Time Again!

This is an unusual year for me as I have actually seen one of the movies in the top three contests (Best Picture, Actor, and Actress).  Mrs. Common Sense shamed me into seeing “The Help” since I took her to see “True Grit.”  By the way, Jeff Bridges in no John Wayne – but I digress.

Indeed after a review of all the categories, “The Help” is the only movie that I have seen of this year’s crop of losers.  Once again I can’t for the life of me understand how a movie that doesn’t make money can be the “Best.”  And why it would matter how good a performance is in a stinker of a film?  Sorry, I just don’t get it.

I won’t be catching any of the festivities.  I can’t generate any interest in the pampered and useless class.

  1. Those awards are OFF my list. Those asshats spend more time congratulating themselves over superficial crap than any group on earth barring the Russian Military. It's no small wonder that they think that their utterances are worthy of consideration.

  2. Well said H. I enjoy a movie just like the next guy but, not what the Hollywood crowd stands for and as stated their, "superficial crap." We are supposed to forget that these folks are the 1%, yet the OWS morons never include them in their protests. Why aren't they occupying Hollywood?
I have to confess my wife was watching and I could hear some of it in the computer room so when she dozed off I sneaked in and muted it.

    1. Paladin,

Well done. I proudly missed all of it last night.

My theory on the origins of the Academy Awards is that it was invented to convince a gullible public to take another look at films that they otherwise wouldn't have gone to see and no one else liked.

It's a re-marketing scheme in my humble opinion.

  3. Confession time ... I have not been to a movie theater since about 1980. Yes, I realize I have missed out on much of the culture and that my 'water cooler talk' was lacking severely. Ok, I am a neanderthal.

You and Hardnox hit the nails squarely on the head.

    1. Mrs. AL,

You haven't missed much really. I think I average one or two movies a year.

If you haven't been since the 1980s - if you do go today, brace yourself for what a ticket and a bucket of popcorn is going to set you back.

I have to laugh - Mrs. CS who doesn't seem to believe that there is any limit to how many pairs of shoes one person needs, will show her thrifty side and sneak a bottle of water or a Diet Pepsi into the theater. She is scandalized by the markup on water and soda.

    2. I am considering a post on Mrs. CS. Some of our least favorite readers brought up something I am considering wiping their nose in, but I haven't yet made up my mind.

    3. Tenth,

Probably best to leave her out of it. I tried to make a friendly comment about my mother one time to the people of whom you speak and those lunatics wanted to communicate with my Mom through posts to me on this blog.

They are without principle and without a shred of dignity. That's why I don't engage them here.

    4. Actually, the post I have in mind is more on Mrs. NinthGenerationPatriot; Mrs. CS would just be an aside. Still thinking about it, but I take your point.

  4. The last movie I saw in the theatre was "300". I found it to be a cheap knock off of the Battle of Bladensburg.

The last time I watched the Oscars, Jamie Foxx won Best Actor for "Ray". His acceptance speech was the best thing a Hollywierdo ever said.

I was almost tempted to watch last night out of respect for Billy Crystal, but I decide to watch the NCIS marathon on USA instead. I'm glad I did. They re-ran their Marine Corps Birthday episode, which reminded me that most Americans don't know shit about the men who protect their Sunday evenings watching the Oscars.

  5. Not only do I not waste my time with the mindless prattle of the twits,I don't take in what they produce, either. Why spend my money and time supporting a bunch of self-indulgent cretins congratulating one another today, then ripping them to shreds tomorrow? To hell with them all. The last movie I saw at the theatre was Jurassic Park. 'Nuff said.

    1. Clyde,

I looked it up - 1993. Nearly 20 years. You have probably saved hundreds in popcorn alone!

      Good show!
