Sixty-Seven Years Ago Today: Iwo Jima

Sixty-seven years ago today, two separate groups of Marines scaled Mount Surabachi during the Battle for Iwo Jima and raised the Stars and Stripes.

This flag raising (the second) included a Navy Corpsman.  God Bless you guys.

  2. That supposedly guaranteed a Marine Corps for the next 500 years. Someone better remind Obama.

    Semper Fi, Marines.

    1. Tenth,

We weathered Truman, we'll weather Obama. America has an army, navy, air force, and so forth - but she loves her Marines.

      Semper Fidelis,

  3. Amigo,
Good post. The "Greatest Generation" still reminds us of what we must do.

    1. Hardnox,

I can only imagine what my Father would think if he were still with us.

    2. Amigo,
I think that he would be disappointed as to where this country is at the moment but he would still be proud of those continuing the fight.

    3. Hardnox,

I would love to have him back. He would be in the fight just like his wife who is still a Precinct Captain at 83. There are members of the greatest generation who are still in the fight.

  4. I remember my parents (especially Dad) talking about this when I was young. Thanx for the reminder, CS.

    1. Mrs. AL,

It was funny - my Dad didn't talk about it much until he visited me when I was stationed in Norfolk, VA. We went to the MacArthur Museum. At a huge wall map that showed all the islands of the World War II Pacific campaign he strode right up to the map, stabbed a finger at Noemfoor Island and said "I was there" and told the story of his part in the landing (he was a radio operator in a Naval Gunfire Spot Team) and the humorous result of a parachute drop.

That was the first time he ever talked about the war to me in any detail.

      Thanks for the visit!

  5. It's only a matter of time until our kids are taught that the war was our fault and, that we only fought the Japs because America is racist.

  6. -Sepp,

It didn't take them long - I remember having to defend the use of the atom bomb when I was in High School - and that was a very long time ago.
