The Constitution of Virginia

I had been so preoccupied with National politics that I hadn’t read the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Virginia – the State where I live.  I have corrected that oversight.  In some ways it isn’t as elegant as the United States Constitution and by comparison it is a little too long.  However I love the way it begins:

A DECLARATION OF RIGHTS made by the good people of Virginia in the exercise of their sovereign powers, which rights do pertain to them and their posterity, as the basis and foundation of government.

Section 1. Equality and rights of men.

That all men are by nature equally free and independent and have certain inherent rights, of which, when they enter into a state of society, they cannot, by any compact, deprive or divest their posterity; namely, the enjoyment of life and liberty, with the means of acquiring and possessing property, and pursuing and obtaining happiness and safety.

Yes Mr. Obama – just across the Potomac live free people.  We intend to stay that way.  You are an impediment to our freedom and we will deal with you in November. 

Please note that all we want is the “means” or the opportunity, not a free ride.

  1. Is it possible to engage in a second Civil War? If so, this time I will align myself with Virginia.

      Given what you guys are going through now I hate to rub it in but . . . . this is also in our Constitution:

      "Section 15-A. Marriage. That only a union between one man and one woman may be a marriage valid in or recognized by this Commonwealth and its political subdivisions."

  2. Superb post, CS!!! Glad you made it through our Constitution. As to it's length ... well seems to me since the States ought be the more powerful entities in what is supposed to be a Republic, it just might have to be longer.

    I just hope the powers that be in Richmond read this blog post. Hmmm ... getting an idea here.

      I know that my Delegate has this document uppermost in his head and heart - he's the one who chided the crowd I was in for not having read it!

  3. Good post,CS. Obama and all other "officials" who ignore these and other documents will do so at THEIR peril. It doesn't matter if they were students of Plato,Hobbes,Marx,Engels,whomever,people just have in them the inherent desire to be free. Even those misguided morons we call liberals. They think that they would not be subjected to the whims of a sovereign,Leviathan,benevolent dictator,what have you,THEY are dangerously mistaken. The idiotic media would be the FIRST to feel the wrath.My belief is it'll never come to that. But,sadly,I do not think we have much time to stop it.

      I think you are right - the Catholic Church is getting a lesson in freedom right now - the rest of us better wake the hell up. I've been telling my preacher for quite some time that they better get out in front of this guy - we better all sit up and take notice.

      Our freedom is under attack from a variety of directions all emanating from the White House.

  4. Nicely done! States' Rights have been getting squashed since 1865. It is high time that they regain their sovereignty. The upcoming ObamaCare decision for the SCOTUS will either prove it or kill our rights further.

  6. Virginia was always the go to state for great leaders and great ideas. Keep fighting the good fight, it may be for our survival as a nation.
    There are many politicians out there who don't know anything about state constitutions or the U.S. Constitution and have proven their ignorance time and again when called on it. They prefer to live by rules they make up as they go. We must keep holding their feet to the fire. Good Post!

      We have a conservative Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, big majority in the House of Delegates, and the Lieutenant Governor breaks ties in the Senate that is split 50-50.

      You are going to see some real American values this legislative season in Virginia.

      George slapped Bin Ladin across the face and yelled, "How dare you try to destroy the nation I helped concieve!"

      Patrick Henry approached, punched him in the nose and shouted, "You wanted to end our liberties but you failed!"

      James Madison followed, kicked him in the groin and said, "This is why I allowed our government to provide for the common defense!"

      Thomas Jefferson was next, beat Bin Ladin with a long cane and snarled, "It was Evil mean like you who inspired me to write the Declaration of Independence."

      The beatings and thrashings continued as George Mason, James Monroe and 66 other early Americans unleashed their anger on the terrorist leader.

      As Bin Ladin lay bleeding and in pain, an Angel appeared.
      Bin Ladin wept and said, "This is not what you promised me."

      The Angel replied, "I told you there would be 72 Virginians waiting for you in heaven. What do you think I said?"

    That there was some brilliant foresight on the part of the founders.

    I'm reading it as No man will ever have the power to inhibit future generations from enjoying the freedoms and liberties as those that the founders had at the moment of signing.

    It's a beautiful thing if you can safeguard it from being tampered with.
